Pre-class quizzes

• There are quizzes due before every class.
• They are embedded in the e-text
  • Self Check at the end of each section in the reading
• You can take the quiz as often as you like
• They are 5% of your grade

• The grades will be moved to Canvas at the end of the semester.

Piazza

• We will use Piazza for our discussion board
• You get one point for every post or response
• I will check for questions several times a day
• Important for you guys to help each other.
  • you will earn a point for each post (either a question or response)
• There will also be clicker type questions during the lecture which count towards participation.
• There is a link to Piazza on the navigation menu on the left in Canvas.
• There are directions for signing up in Canvas under Syllabus
• I also want to help you learn how to ask good questions when you need help and how to give good answers

Homework

• Submit your homework in Canvas Assignment area
• Two homeworks due every week
  • draft
  • final
• Homework due at 1:00 AM on Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Grace period until 6:00 AM.
  • No point penalty if submitted by 6AM
  • But not accepted after 6am.
  • Plan ahead.
    • Plan to be done at 1:00 AM. Then if there is a problem, you have time to solve it
    • If the assignment closes at 5:59 rather than 6:00 on your machine, I can not help you.That is the risk you take by not submitting by the due date
  • But I will drop the lowest score
• 25% of your grade

  • I will extend deadline if necessary
• Homework will be in Canvas with a link to a page on my laughton.com/obrien/sjsu server (I will post more homeowrk later)
• Please do not post questions about an assignment in Piazza before it is open on Canvas
  • It is confusing to students working at thepace of the class
  • I will delete those posts.

Reading + Videos and Pre-class Quizzes

• Reading and videos assigned for every class.
• The self-check exercises at the end of each reading section are the Pre-class quizzes
• 5% of your grade

Required Lab Section

• You must attend the lab and do the assigned work
• You must pass the lab to pass the class
  • You will fail the class if you miss more than 3 labs

• Labs are also submitted in Canvas
• If you pass the lab, it counts as 5% of your grade
• Everyone should be able to get a good score on the labs.
  • Points are for showing up and putting in a good effort.

• I'll go over anything you have a question about in the reading

  • take a look at the homework before class
  • ask lots of questions about it

Exams

• Two exams
  • 15% each for a total of 30%
• A Final
  • 30%
• Bring your laptop for exams as well as class and labs

Dropping non-attending students

• If you do not attend either of the first two classes, you will be dropped

First Week Attendance

• Your attendance is indicated by submitting First Day Attendence located in Quizzes
• No credit
• You must submit it to avoid being dropped
