Things to bring to the exam

MUST BRING

• A laptop with Java, BlueJ, and with the password-protected exam downloaded. I will post the URL of the exam the day before the exam. You will get the password when the exam starts.
• During the exam, you will see a file, index.html, in the unzipped folder. Open that. But remember that Codecheck does not work with Safari. If Safari is your default browser, right click on index.html and select "Open with" Google Chrome
• A USB memory stick. If you want it back, put a label with your name on the outside. This is back-up in case there is an Internet problem
• A charger and perhaps an extension cord if your battery will not last for the entire exam.

MAY USE

• Your textbook downloaded on your laptop
• The Java API installed on your machine (if you want to use it)
• Any Java code - on your laptop
• Notes

MAY NOT

• Connect to the Internet during the exam except for Canvas and Codecheck

A  WARNING

• I recommend that on your Windows system that you disable automatic updates before the exam (or set a metered connection). One semester, Windows decided it was time to update a student's computer at the beginning of the exam. It took about 30 minutes to update and restart.

Rules for the Exam

• I may be able to give you partial credit even if your code fails Codecheck so be sure to submit it.
• You should download the exam file the day before the exam.
• You may not connect to any Internet site except Codecheck and Canvas. You may not access any communication software - Facebook, Twitter, email, instant message, etc.
• The exam period ends at 2:40. You have until 2:45 to finish uploading. Use that 5 minutes to upload the files to Canvas. Do not keep coding. Do not use Codecheck. The exam will close at 2:50. If you cna not not upload your files, you must talk to me promptly after the exam.
• You may not submit anything after the exam is over and you leave the room.
• Code in Bluej to reduce the server load.
• The first couple of problems do not have a starter file, so you will not need to access Codecheck until your code is working in Bluej.
• The instructions are in the html file in the exam folder. Double click to open the exam. If Safari is your default browser, right click on index.html and select "Open with" Google Chrome
• You may NOT communicate with anyone during the exam.
• You may NOT use the work of anyone else without attribution. This means if you have copied code from an Internet site like stackoverflow.com, you must put the URL of the page with the code in a comment in your file.
• You may NOT use any web sites except Canvas and Codecheck
• When you are finished, upload signed.zip files you created all at the same time,
• If you can not upload to Canvas, put your signed.zip files on your USB and turn that in. Put your files in a folder named lastName_firstName. If you want the USB back, put your name on the drive itself.
• I will accept USBs for partial credit (unless there is a universal problem) You must be sure your computer is working and can connect to the Internet.

• You may not leave to go the the bathroom or for any other reason. Go to the bathroom before the exam and tell your friends you will return cell phone calls and text messages after the exam.
• If your battery does not last the entire class, be sure to bring a charger.
• If you are able to upload, do not worry if your submission is marked late. No points will be deducted.
• You will upload 5 signed.zip files, all at the same time.
• If you have to give me a USB, put the files in a folder named yourLastName_yourFirstName
• Do not wear a hoodie or a hat. We need to be able to see your eyes.

Very simplified life insurance underwriting algorithm:

The basic cost for one year of life insurance for a man is $1000. For a woman it is $750. Certain factors can raise or lower the cost. If the person is less than 30, the cost is decreased by 10%. If the person smokes, the cost is increased by 50%. If the person lives in New York City or Los Angeles, the cost increases by $100. Execute the increase or decreases in the order given. Sex, age, smokes, lives

Practice exam

The practice exam is not comprehensive and does not include as many problems as the actual exam. Its purpose is so you can be familiar with the format before the day of the exam.
